“Sometimes the hardest part isn’t letting go but rather learning to start over.”
– Nicole Sobon
In a little less than four months, I will be on the plane flying back to Asia on a one-way ticket, starting over in a place that I am unfamiliar with, in a culture that is very different from the one I’m living in right now.
I have been living in Canada for the majority of my life, but my parents’ intention was never for me to stay and grow old here. They have always had the notion that this will be a place for school, and that once I graduate, I will go back to Taiwan, settle down, and find a job. I am very thankful for my parents for giving me the opportunity to study in a foreign country, but a lot of sacrifices were made along the way as well. As a child, I saw my mom only two, or at most three, times a year, less than two weeks each time, because she had to stay in Taiwan to work. My dad stayed in Canada to take care of my sister and me even though he would much rather be back in Taiwan than stuck in North America. Sometimes I wonder if it is all worth it? I will never know though, since I can’t turn back the time and start over again from the beginning. When I asked my mom about it a few years ago, she told me that my dad had expressed regrets, but she said that regret won’t solve anything. The only thing that we can do now is to keep moving forward and not looking back.
“Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see”
– Mark Twain
A friend of mine recently recited that brilliant quote to me, and then went on to say that a lot of people mistaken kindness for politeness, but that is not true kindness. I have never thought about it that way, but I think that she is absolutely correct. Politeness is something that can be taught, and it’s a lot easier to be polite than to be kind. Politeness is displayed to conform to social expectations, whereas kindness can be altruistic and most importantly, involve empathy. This makes me question my own actions: Am I kind, or am I just polite? Of course it could be both, but I have never really thought about it until now.
I have discovered that the best music don’t often make it onto the radio and top 20 playlists. Sometimes I feel like certain songs are getting too much recognition while others are not getting nearly enough.
“I’m gonna pick up the pieces,
And build a Lego house
When things go wrong we can knock it down”
What do you think the Lego house represents?
I recently received a package in the mail from a friend in Taiwan; a belated Christmas gift. To that friend: thanks for making my day! I love getting things in the mail~ It’s so much fun to receive snail mail, even though it takes forever.
Colourful marshmallows + a handmade card.
Sometimes when I come home from a long day at work, feeling a bit cranky because work was insanely busy as usual, seeing a package or a letter waiting for me on my desk really cheers me up. I love replying letters too, and I have a lot of letter paper, envelopes, pretty pens and stickers that are perfect for letter-writing.
On a different note, I finally did my nails:
Sparitual Native Rock & Essie Lady Like
The ring finger was painted with my new polish, the Essie Lady Like, and the rest is Sparitual’s Native Rock. I love that colour, even though it’s so similar Lady Like. The colour looks different under different lighting. In this picture it looks a bit grey, but under different lighting it can look more purple. I also applied the Seche Vite quick dry top coat, and it dried really quickly! Now I see why people love it so much.
I have had my Samsung smartphone for a few months now, and even though I adore it, I have been under-utilizing it. This is my first smartphone, and it is also the first phone that allows me to access the internet through WiFi. After discovering the Google Play Store, I just went ahead and downloaded the usual: Facebook, Skype, and also Pudding Camera and Instagram. However, I was recently introduced to a couple of fun apps, such as Line.
Line is similar to Watsapp and Skype, but cuter (and free! Watsapp costs $$ now..). I am in love with all the stickers and cute emoticons, and the fact that you can call someone for free, even if they live on the other side of the world, as long as the other person also has Line and has internet connection. Line camera is also really great, with pretty effects and really cute stickers.
Take a look at a picture that I took with Line camera:

Hehe, <3 Want to know what are in those packages? Stay tuned for my next post!
I tried to teach my mother how to use Line, but unfortunately her smartphone’s android system is too old. :( We found out later on that the reason why she couldn’t download Line was because she had Android version 2.2, and you need to have version 2.3 or higher to access the Google Play Store, otherwise you only get access to Google Market (the predecessor of Play Store).
Happy belated New Year, everybody! I haven’t been updating much even though I really should. Where should I start??
Well, I didn’t do anything special for New Years Eve nor New Years this year. Usually I would watch TV (the usual show that most people in North America watches: the New Years Eve party in New York) and participate in the countdown. To be honest though, to me, New Years Eve is just another day, 2013 is just another year. Did anyone make New Years resolutions?
This year I picked up ballroom dancing again. Once upon a time (back in high school), I learned the basics of west coast swing, jive, cha cha, and waltz. However, after many years of negligence on my part by not practicing or pursuing it further, I forgot almost everything. I recently attended the first class of the year and I had a lot of fun! I’m looking forward to the next class.
I have also gotten hooked on nail polish. Now I realize that nail polish can be quite addicting after you start looking at all the colours and all the different nail polish brands that are out there. I used to think that nail polish was just nail polish, and cheap ones would do. But cheap nail polish never has nice colours, and they’re usually metallic or sparkly. I prefer single shades. A friend recently introduced me to an online Canadian website that sells nail polish (with no shipping fee if you purchase over a certain amount), and I had to restrain myself to only buying two bottles this time. There will be many many next times though. I already created a wishlist!
A look at my recent purchase:

I heard that this was the best top coat out there, so I decided to buy it and give it a try.

This one is Essie’s Lady Like, a very pretty mauve. It’s such a nice neutral shade and I can’t wait to try it out!
